"I have lived eighty years of life and know nothing for it, but to be resigned and tell myself that flies are born to be eaten by spiders and man to be devoured by sorrow."
Voltaire
It is one of the harsh realities of living in a fallen world - that sadness comes to us all.
Is there any benefit or protection afforded the Christian in relation to such sadness?
Is there anything about the Christian that makes them more susceptible and prone to sadness?
Welsh preacher Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones tackles - not depression and sadness as it is experienced by wider humanity - but as it specifically attends to the Christian. "Spiritual Depression" is his great work in this regards. Lloyd-Jones's analysis of the Christian person is remarkably astute, his insights into the errors we make profound, and his remedies are powerful. While, at points, the style of preaching heads towards an almost allegorical reading, that this series of sermons preached in London in the 1970's maintains its potency and relevance for Christians today is remarkable.
That each chapter is one sermon, means that this is just the kind of book that is easy to pick-up for a quick "bite-sized" read.
A great book for those who want to think further about "what makes us tick".
