Sunday 5 April was Palm Sunday and members of St Alban's decided to embark on an Easter Door Knock to wish the residents of Lindfield a Happy Easter, offer them and Easter egg (who could resist) and an invitation to one of our services this coming weekend.
My wife and I visited a section of the community and the response was overwhelmingly positive. When the door opened - at first you could see the dread (Oh no - who is this?) But once we introduced ourselves and the purpose of our visit virtually everyone was relived we weren't selling anything and delighted to receive such a simple greeting. Happy Easter - would you like an Easter egg? People smiled and were more than happy to chat.
But it does say a lot about our world and how it has changed doesn't it? We all wonder who it will be at the front door if there is a knock and we are not expecting a friend or someone we know. How sad it is that we have even become apprehensive about openning the front door! But the other side of the equation is no less remarkable. People were genuinely delighted to recieve a no strings attached, 'G'Day and Happy Easter greeting'
So simple - and yet so welcomed and embraced. If you happened to be one of the people members of St Alban's visited this week - we hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did. It has been great to get out into the community and meet the people we live amongst and just get to know each other a little better.
Our prayer for everyone in our community is that we all might have a wonderful Easter - and if possible join us for one of our services. But if not our greeting is no less warm. We hope you have a lovely Easter and have the opportunity to take - even a moment to think about the death and ressurection of Jesus - which means so much to millions of Christians throughout the world. The Easter Door Knock was a pleasant surprise for all concerned. Maybe it should encourage us all to be more open to meeting new people. Who know we might even like each other!
God Bless and thanks to all who greeted us so warmly on our door knock this weekend. . Michael
